10 Activities to Add to Your Wellness Retreat Itinerary

Are you planning a wellness retreat? I recommend some locations like Antigua or the Dominican Republic. After all, a Dominican Republic wellness retreat may be just what you need. Whether you’re traveling with a group or solo, here are some recommendations if you’re planning a wellness retreat Dominican Republic-style.

Dominican Republic wellness retreat

This past June, I had the privilege of attending a group trip down to the Dominican Republic where we had the honor of staying at two spots: the TRS Turquesa Hotel and the TRS Cap Cana Waterfront & Marina Hotel. (You can check them out more right here and here.)

Whether you’re exploring new parts of the world solo or with a group of friends, consider a Dominican Republic wellness retreat even if it’s not an official “wellness retreat.” Here are some tips for creating your very own wellness experience while enjoying a long weekend or week-long vacation away.

1. Actually put on the white robe and wear the slippers

There’s no better way to start a Dominican Republic wellness retreat than to check in and actually put on the fluffy white bathroom hanging in the closet and slip into the plush slippers they provide as well. While you’re decompressing from your long journey, pop that champagne bottle left as a welcome gift and pour yourself a glass while you enjoy some fresh fruit and a homemade Dominican Republic snack of coconut bites.

2. Book a service at the spa

Continue to channel the spa-like vibes of the white robe and slippers by booking yourself a spa service (if available). During my stay at the TRS Turquesa Hotel, I enjoyed a deep tissue massage at Zentropia Palladium Spa & Wellness.

This spa is one of the most complete spas in the country and offers guests a unique opportunity to relax and unwind with a complete wellness experience. This included a unique Hydrotherapy Circuit that included 10 stops to different water treatments like the sauna, steam room, a cold room complete with snow, a dip in a heated pool, and a cold plunge all before my scheduled spa service. (Note: I highly recommend the Hydrotherapy Circuit if you have the additional 60-90 minutes of time. Your skin will be absolutely glowing and radiant afterward.)

3. Drink a mocktail

If you’re like me, you may enjoy an occasional cocktail or glass of wine every now and then, but you usually stick to water on the rocks. (I know, rebel.) If you’re really feeling fancy, you may even order a handcrafted mocktail from time to time. Hey, I love me some wine, but sometimes I don’t want to sacrifice the quality of my sleep.

If you really do want to channel all of the vibes of a wellness retreat Dominican Republic-style, opt for a signature mocktail. I recommend a mixture of coconut milk, fresh pineapple juice, a splash of seltzer water, a pinch of fresh lime juice, and a few fresh mint leaves. (Umm, yeah, it’s just as good as it sounds. It’s basically a vacation in a glass, so you’re welcome.)

4. Eat all of the food, at least once

Traveling to different countries includes new cuisines, which means trying new foods. When attending, creating, and planning your very own version of a Dominican Republic wellness retreat, make it a point to try all of the foods — at least once.

Whether it’s a coursed-out gastronomy dinner, a blend of Japanese and Peruvian culture at Kusko, or Argentinian barbeque at El Gaucho, try all of the fun flavors and foods. Oh, and let’s not forget dessert. Dulce de Leche cookies, anyone? (Yes, please!)

5. Explore the local town

As lovely as it is to stay on property, especially when staying at an all-inclusive resort, you may want to venture out of the property gates (if it’s safe) to explore the surrounding local town. You may stumble upon the quaintest little church or stone streets that really make you feel like you are in another world, so take some time to explore the nearby town if possible.

6. Hang in the hammock

Whether it’s a beach cabana or a poolside hammock, pull up your choice of a chair (dealer’s choice) and take some time to soak in the sun’s rays. Order that pina colada or try something new like a Pornstar Martini — literally the best. (You can thank me later.) Oh, and don’t forget to slather on all of the SPF.

7. Go to the gym or try a new activity

Okay, okay, I know what you’re thinking. I’m going on a Dominican Republic wellness retreat to get away from my daily gym routine. Hey, that’s all well and good, but I’m someone who needs a workout every morning. (IYKYK.)

If the properties you’re staying at have a gym, I challenge you to explore it and get creative with planning a workout even if the equipment isn’t what you’re accustomed to normally. After all, your body is challenged and changes when it encounters something new.

Maybe even mix it up and opt for another property-focused activity like archery, beachside Pilates, or a guided property tour to get some walking in. (Hey, you never regret a walk, am I right?) You may even opt for a slow stroll on the beach. All for the sake of wellness.

8. Learn about the culture

One of the most fascinating parts of traveling to another part of the world is learning about their culture. If you want to experience your own wellness retreat Dominican Republic-style, learn about the culture, fare, and fun they have by seeing what the properties offer to give you a glimpse of the local culture.

During my stay at the TRS Turquesa Hotel, we had a private cocktail tasting where we learned about some of the flavors of the Dominican Republic culture including a countrywide favorite — Mama Juana.

9. Schedule a beach day or some pool time

A big part of a Dominican Republic wellness retreat, or any wellness retreat for that matter, is scheduling some time for you. For me, that means heading to the beach or pool for the entire day or afternoon. For you, that may look like something else. Whatever you choose, make sure you schedule some form of “you time” that will fill you up so you can leave your very own DIY wellness retreat feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and relaxed.

10. Watch the sunset

I’m more of a sunrise person (early bird over here), but whether you enjoy the sunrise or the sunset, use either of these opportunities (or both) to be fully present in the moment. If that happens to include a hot cup of coffee or tea in hand or a handcrafted cocktail or mocktail, enjoy each and every sip as you say hello to the day ahead or bid the day adieu as you head into the night.

Planning a Dominican Republic wellness retreat

The next time you’re planning a wellness retreat Dominican Republic-style, consider staying at the TRS Turquesa Hotel and TRS Cap Cana Waterfront & Marina Hotel.

“TRS Cap Cana Waterfront & Marina Hotel and TRS Turquesa Hotel are both wellness havens, offering a range of amenities and services to enhance the well-being and relaxation of our guests,” says Pilar Arizmendi-Stewart, VP of sales and marketing for the Americas. “Both hotels offer a combination of natural beauty, exclusive amenities, and exceptional services.
