Period Pain, Be Gone: 9 Ways to Soothe Menstrual Cramps

Period pain: It happens to the best of us. Whether you deal with menstrual cramps, period poops, or are just looking for a PMS home remedy (let’s be real, maybe even a few remedies to menstrual cramps), consider this the ultimate go-to guide to all things period cramps cure.

This includes some fun things you can do to get your mind off of those period cramps even if that means staying hunkered down on the homefront while you’re curled up on the couch. Hey, no shame in that game!

Remedies to menstrual cramps

1. Comfort food

When I’m on my monthly menstrual cycle, all I want is comfort food. For me, that means endless bags of chips and salsa. (Cue all those Cinco de Mayo vibes with brands like Siete Foods and SOMOS.)

For others, that may mean another type of cuisine — but why order in takeout when you have options like Chef Woo Ramen, Goodles, Immi, Laoban Dumplings, and Saffron Road, all of which can help satisfy any comfort food cravings.

You can also keep it simple with a hot mug of Dr. Kellyann Petrucci’s Miso Mushroom Bone Broth, which can be incredibly soothing as you curl up with your heating pad. Sip, sip, hooray!

2. Heating pad

Speaking of heating pads, if you’re looking for remedies to menstrual cramps and the ultimate period cramps cure, look no further than the My Obi and their Apollo TENS and Heating Belt.

It’s an innovative, unique solution that provides effective, drug-free pain relief for menstrual cramps by combining gentle electrical pulses (TENS) and heat therapy to target the source of the pain, drastically reducing discomforts associated with periods. This PMS home remedy is a must-have item for your next monthly cycle.

3. Hydrate

Drinking more water and staying hydrated can help with period cramps, so load up on glasses of water or other hydrating beverages like coconut water from 100 Coconuts

Add some greenery to your favorite bevy with Athletic Greens or perhaps some electrolytes using GoHydrate packets. You can also toss in some collagen from Live Conscious or plant-based protein powder from Form Nutrition

4. Meat

Okay, so if you’re a vegan or vegetarian, you’re probably going to want to skip this one — but during your monthly cycle, you lose blood (obviously), which is why you may be craving iron-rich foods like dark chocolate, dates, and my personal favorite source of iron, red meat. If you’re like me, make sure your kitchen freezer is fully stocked with items from brands like Butcher Box and Verde Farms. (Your iron levels and stomach will thank you.)

5. Sex toys

There’s no set time when you may feel a wave of feeling frisky. For many, it happens right around ovulation, but then there are some people who are really feeling themselves leading up to their monthly cycles. (Get it!)

If this is you, you may want to stock up on some sex toys from brands like Deia and plusOne. Having an orgasm during your monthly cycle can actually be considered a period cramps cure. Cue the masturbation or period sex in fun new sex positions with your partner.

6. Skincare products

If you plan on trying out these remedies for menstrual cramps, you may be spending some time at home. Why not fill your time with an at-home DIY spa night? Whether you’re ready for some Ayurvedic treatments or your skin is totally breaking out and is in need of some major TLC, treat yourself to some relaxing self-care.

Some brands to include your at-home spa night include: Barker Wellness, Bigger Than Beauty Skincare, Curel, Figaro, Insta Naturals, MicroTouch (in case you’re not quite yet ready to book that Brazilian and you need to bushwhack instead), Murad Skincare, Schick, Seratopical, and Yuni Beauty.

7. Snack attack

Besides a bout of menstrual cramps, if you get a case of the munchies during your monthly cycle, make sure your pantry (either desk side pantry or home kitchen pantry) is well stocked with the ultimate snacks to help with that period cramps cure. Some great go-to options include Forager Project, Hope Foods, Made Good Foods, MUSH, Sabra Hummus, and Wholly Veggie.

8. Sweet tooth cravings

This may not be a typical “remedies to menstrual cramps,” but who else gets major sweet tooth cravings when they’re on their monthly cycle? (Cue me raising my hand.) If you’re looking for something sweet, yet more mindful, try Sweetkiwi, which is whipped frozen Greek yogurt.

You may also want to stay busy making a homemade ice cream option using bananas. All you need is Yonanas and, you guessed it, bananas. Don’t forget the deliciously fun “nice” cream toppings too.

If candy is more of your thing during those period cramps, grab some dried fruit jerky from Solely or a bag or two of SmartSweets.

9. Vaginal health products

During your monthly cycle, you may think more of your Queen V, which is the perfect time to show her a little extra love. One of my favorite brands is The Honey Pot Co., especially their daily foaming wash product line. (I can’t rave about it enough!)

You may even consider taking a supplement like InSync from My Girl Wellness. This tasty treat stabilizes blood sugar, maintains healthy cortisol levels, and (bonus) reduces PMS symptoms.

The powdered supplement is a powerful blend of hormone-supporting ingredients designed to balance every aspect of the body. Some of the hero ingredients include Ashwagandha, Dandelion Root, Magnesium, MCT Powder, Glycinate, and L-Theanine.

Perhaps you even want to get your vaginal health tested with at-home wellness kits from Evvy. Maybe just wait until your period passes for that one.

The bottom line on remedies to period cramps

Though there are certain items that can definitely count as a period cramps cure (think of classic things like dark chocolate and heating pads), there are also many other items you can have in your wellness arsenal that can serve as a great PMS home remedy. Stock up on one or all of these items just in time for your next monthly cycle.
