The Best Non-Alcoholic Spirits to Try This Summer
Move over Shirley Temple or the less than favorable non-alcoholic beer options: There’s an expanding market for non-alcoholic spirits for those looking to drink more mindfully or eliminate alcohol altogether.
From my perspective, “sober curiosity” seemed to be a growing trend before the pandemic, and the pandemic really prompted many to rethink their relationship with alcohol.
As an RD, I find that it’s a tougher topic to address with clients, yet we do really underestimate the hormonal impact of alcohol (most people first just think about calories). So, it’s safe to say if you’re experiencing hormonal issues and alcohol is a big part of your life (and identity), it might be time to gently re-evaluate its place in your life.
Hilary Shienbaum, author of The Dry Challenge, addresses going booze-free short- or long-term in an approachable way and emphasizes adding in complex drinks, adventurous activities, and social support. When asked why she often sees people initially ditching the alcohol, she says common reasons include sleep, finances, and better mood.
Like with any major health change, most people notice a synchrony of changes to their overall life that are often beyond their initial motive, which can really spark long-term change. A study from the University of Sussex found that completing “Dry January” not only resulted in positive improvements in the majority of its participants for that month, but it also led to less drinking overall for the entire year.
As I’ve recently been trying more non-alcoholic beverages, I’ve become more and more impressed by the diverse and refreshing flavor profiles. There are so many ways to make a sippable “mocktail” that really hits the spot when trying to cut back. I find that I really identify with the branding of a lot of these companies, romanticizing the aesthetics and taste of mocktails and showcasing how going booze-free can simply help you do more in life. Below are a few brands that I’d like to share.

These have no added sugars, all-natural ingredients, and adaptogens for specific purposes, including ashwagandha for relaxation and turmeric to reduce inflammation. The flavors really get me excited here — from a smoked cherry chocolate old fashioned to a spicy pineapple margarita. All of these are in a satisfying amber colored bottle or you can pour it into your favorite glass with garnishes.
I’m currently on a mezcal kick, and I quickly found this brand while researching non-alcoholic mezcal. They also have gin and whiskey, so essentially all the liquor I really enjoy for its flavor. These are great to get creative with, and the brand has a handful of drink recipes on their site. Mezcal margaritas, anyone?
This one is an alcohol-free aperitif, or pre-meal drink to stimulate the appetite. The aperitif has a uniquely bitter taste and is paired best with Topo Chico. They also carry canned spritzes and have an eclectic bunch of recipes on their site. I’m honestly a fan — these drinks have a “bite” in the best way, and their branding exudes Mediterranean summer vibes.
This is a go-to if you’re looking for alcohol-removed wine. They also encompass all my faves — a Red Blend, Sparkling Rosé, and Sauvignon Blanc. These are made with all-natural ingredients and perfectly paired with a summer day or a home-cooked meal.
The bottom line on non-alcoholic spirits
Again, these are just a few that I’ve enjoyed and have piqued my interest, but non-alcoholic beers, wines, and liquors are expanding. I encourage you to browse the Better Rhodes Non-Alcoholic Marketplace for a wider array of options.
More and more bars and restaurants are also serving NA drinks if you don’t feel like concocting one yourself. All in all, if you’re looking to try just a dry month, cut out alcohol entirely, or not have alcohol paired with EVERY activity in your life — I see you — then non-alcoholic spirits just might be what you’re looking for.
